Both destinations sound very similar and clients even get them messed up when they book their vacation - however Puerto Plata and Punta Cana are very different vacation spots here in the Dominican Republic - and they are VERY FAR AWAY one from the other - so if you plan to stay in the Puerto Plata area try to get a flight to Puerto Plata, Santiago, Samana or Santo Dominigo airport and when you will stay in Punta Cana try to land at Punta Cana, La Romana or Santo Dominigo airport. There are only very few regular domestic flights offered between Punta Cana and Puerto Plata and the travel time by minivan is between 5.5 and 6,5 hours. The main difference between both destinations is that Puerto Plata is mountanous and Punta Cana is rather flat, Punta Cana has the nicer beaches and the better weather than Puerto Plata, Punta Cana is like Disneyworld - there are no natural grown villages and almost no normal life outside the hotels. Almost all hotels in Punta Cana are big All Inclusive Resorts. In Puerto Plata you have to distinguish between different areas like Corfresi, Maimon, Playa or Costa Dorada, Sosua and Cabarete. You will find similar big All Inclusive Resorts like in Punta Cana when you look at Corfresi, Maimon and Playa or Costa Dorada - however you will also find lots of smaller not All Inclusive Boutique Hotels when you look at Sosua or Cabarete. Cabarete is the Paradise for Surfers and in my opinion the nicest place to stay if you choose the North Coast for your next vacation in the Dominican Republic. In Cabarete you will find a nice small natural grown village with very nice restaurants at the beach and lots of small shops - everything together in an area of about 1 mile of extension.
